FAQ

For most people, emergency management and how to apply it is not well understood. The following FAQs are designed to answer some basic questions and encourage you to consider building resilience into your enterprise.

  • Watchtower has the ability to provide most services to any enterprise in Canada. A quick discussion with us will allow both of us to determine the way ahead.

  • Mark’s extensive military background sets him apart from other emergency managers. The military is not only experienced in planning for crises, but reacting to, and shaping them to suit our objectives. We approach potential crises with confidence, calm and concise priorities. An example is the Royal Canadian Navy. At its very core of operations are three simple priorities: Float. Move. Fight.

Watchtower EM has decided to focus on small and medium sized enterprises. There is little or no profit for EM corporations to address this segment, but where they see no gain, I see market segments that could improve through resilience.

  • Many of the advantages are there to see, if you know what you are looking for.

On a personal level, we are masters of time in both keeping our appointments and using it to our advantage. Attention to detail is constant.

We are mission focused and goal oriented. Priorities are established and maintained in the face of ambiguity and stress. Perhaps most importantly, our training and experience allows us to view challenges from a vantage point that other emergency managers cannot duplicate.

  • Simply put, we will discuss it. We know that there are businesses where paying for an emergency management plan will constitute a minimal cost-benefit advantage. Considering the limited resources available to small and medium-sized enterprises, it may not be worthwhile.

However, a discussion will also be the first step in determining what your enterprise may require, and what form a Plan may take. Ultimately, we are dedicated to client-specific and tailored analysis and recommendations.

  • The short, clear answer is “yes”. Any enterprise that depends on suppliers, transportation, agriculture, computer servers, weather, or any of a large number of other dependencies, climate change is creating difficulties. Vancouver’s seaport was cut off from Canada in November 2021, creating supply-chain blockages. As of Fall, 2022, droughts are drying up local shipping lanes on major rivers in the USA and Europe. Climate change is world-wide and that includes Ottawa, Ontario, and Canada.

  • Yes, natural, technological, human-made and reputational hazards will arise. Blizzards and extreme cold will continue to grip Ottawa.

The key is the impact of the hazard, as in blizzards and extreme cold. Taking preventative or mitigating actions in advance, being prepared when it arrives, responding in the best interests of your business, may all be done in advance.

Picture a water pipe, uninsulated, bursting in the extreme cold. For the very low price of Styrofoam, it could have been prevented. Now the high costs will be a plumber, a damaging leak, anxiety and time.

  • Well, it depends. Emergency management software will help in terms of vulnerable supply chains, large numbers of employees, numerous business locations, computer file back-ups, and other high-level considerations. They are, as one would expect, quite costly. They make sense for larger businesses.

Small and medium sized enterprises willing to pay for the service and subscription will see benefits. However, Watchtower has no subscriptions, no software development costs, and tailors each product to each client. We will provide what you need, with no unnecessary considerations to puzzle through.

  • Each plan includes what Watchtower and client agree is required. Aspects of a plan that are not required will not be present, nor billed.

Watchtower emergency management plans will begin by assessing the situation in which your business operates. It will explain the background and theory underpinning the analysis and recommendations. That background and theory is then applied specifically to your business, focused on hazards that we have identified together.

From this comes accurate, actionable and achievable recommendations on means to improve the resilience of your business in the face of the identified hazards. There will be numerous annexes of additional information. The Plan is delivered and at least one hour will be made available to review the plan together.

Finally, an in-person or virtual follow-up will be scheduled to determine, and when necessary, improve your level of satisfaction.

  • Watchtower will always make time for questions and answers. To be blunt, if our Plan missed something, we’ll correct that. If the situation or question merits a larger answer or effort, Watchtower is available at hourly rates to ensure your requirements are met.
